Gardeners, allotment growers and community garden volunteers across London are celebrating an urban harvest festival this week in an eight-day programme of events and open gardens.
Over 20 London community gardens are hosting events, workshops and open days to encourage more people to get involved and emphasise how growing your own food can help tackle the nature and climate crises.
“Urban gardens create important biodiversity corridors, habitats for wildlife and areas that cool and shade our cities,” said coordinator for London’s food growing network, Capital Growth, Fi McAllister.
“This summer’s extreme weather has shown us that our urban food growing community needs our support like never before.”
Londoners can also visit Grow, an urban agroecological farm in north London, on Thursday 15 September for a tour followed by an expert panel discussing how urban farms, schools and communities can work together to build a better food system.
Calthorpe Community Garden in Kings Cross is also releasing its handbook, Growing for Change, on Friday 16 September to inspire community gardens in their role in tackling the climate crisis and building solidarity in communities.
“As a movement, we need to do better at demonstrating the crucial role our food growing spaces play not only in creating meaning and community for so many Londoners, offering a lifeline for communities who need access to fresh food the most, but also in responding to the climate and nature emergency,” added McAllister.
